The Next Step For Minorities
April 23, 2014
On Friday, April 25th, another phase of integrating minority students into AP classes will begin.
“This is basically an effort for this group of students to learn about college and then go mentor students at South East so that they can come and join AP classes.” Principal John Bacon said.
Students will be going to the University of Iowa and then drop by South East to mentor minority students there. The Minority students selected were identified by having a 3.0 or higher and having scored in the ninetieth percentile on their Iowa Assessments.
“I want to learn more about AP classes.” Said one member of the group, Bory Chea ‘17, “I’ve heard a lot of things; that the classes are hard, that there are only white people and it’s scary.” Said Bory Chea ‘17, a member of the group.
The effort to diversify AP classes has come to be known as Project Achieve. The goal of the project is to gain equality in all of City High’s classes. They will be attending lectures or going on educational field trips.
“I just want the courage to attend AP classes. It’s intimidating and I’m not sure what to expect.” Said Chea ‘17.
