This year, City High’s fall play will be The Diviners. Auditions for the show will be held this Tuesday and Wednesday from 3:30 to 5:30 in Troy Peters’ room, in the upper music wing. The play will go up October 16, 17 and 18, tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults, tickets can be purchased online at www.seatyourself.biz/iowacityhs.

Divining means to search, which is what this play is about. The Diviners follows the story of a young mentally-challenged boy who has a special talent for divining water, but is also terribly afraid of it at the same time. The director of the play, Troy Peters, explains how he sees the meaning of the play.

“I think it’s about community, and what people are always searching for in their lives.” Peters says. “Everybody in this community works together and helps each other, and then there are some that don’t, and we see those lessons as well.”

The play has 11 characters, five female roles, and six male roles. There aren’t any ‘bit parts’, meaning all of the roles are larger, main characters. The age range of the characters is roughly 14 to 50. Peters describes the characters as he sees them being portrayed.

“Some are loud and annoying, some are a little shy and reserved”, Peters states, “We’ve got some great characters, very rustic and humourous.”

There are monologues for the different characters for auditionees to choose from, they can also bring in their own monologue from a different show. Peters is looking for some sections of the monologue to be memorized, so the performance comes alive, rather than just being reading.

Among the audition requirements, Peters is also looking to find actors that have a wide range of emotions, are able to take direction, are open to new ideas, and who are agreeable and dependable. The schedule for the play is time consuming, actors must be able to commit to the show throughout September and October until the 18th.
