Little Hawks Advance In Regional Play

Innes Hicsasmaz, Sports Editor

Last night, City High won their third set 27-25 and took the match against Burlington 3-1, advancing to the next round of regional play.

At the beginning of the match, the atmosphere in the gym was predominantly pro-Burlington, with the Grayhound student section close to 80 people, outnumbering City’s section by a few dozen. For a home game, this seemed to take the Little Hawks by surprise; they struggled to find a solid lead in the first set, losing 23-25.

The girls came back after the first set with a newfound energy and rhythm. City’s defense figured out Burlington’s plays and were able to keep the rallies long. With consistent serving by Sarah Plock and Shannon James and strong kills by Alexa Ingram, Rylee Price, and Kendra Cave, City took control of the points, winning the third set 25-10. Burlington kept up a fight, with close scores in the second and last sets, but with too many errors from the Grayhounds and balanced consistency and aggression from City,  the Little Hawks were able to pull ahead.

There will be a fan bus to take students to Cedar Rapids Linn-Mar High School for the Regionals final against Prairie on Tuesday, November 4th. Students will need parent permission and $6 to get into the game. Field trip permission slips can be found in the Main Office.
