THE RUNDOWN: The Little Hawk varsity girls are preparing to go head to head with Cedar Rapids Kennedy. City High defeated Cedar Rapids Kennedy 67-44 in last years game.

Little Hawk varsity girls coach Bill McTaggart has confidence in the team and believes they have a good chance.

“If we are hanging with them in the first half I like our chances but I think by half time if things are close I have confidence in them,” coach McTaggart said.

Kennedy has two all state players that could make it a difficult game for the Little Hawks if not handled – two girls with collegiate destinations, one a Minnesota-bound ESPN top 60 player. To be able to have a chance, McTaggart addressed that the team must control the two players.

“If we play to our capabilities and shut down their two leading scorers they are averaging 40 between them, then we have a good chance but if we can’t control their two leading scorers we are going to be in for a long night,” McTaggart said.

The team has been hit with multiple injuries, but starting guard Courtney Joens ’16 is back in the game after being injured previously herself.

There is still some uncertainty regarding her playing condition, but McTaggart is confident in her abilities.

“She is a former all state and first team all conference player so that will help us,” McTaggart said, “She can still shoot it and that will give us a perimeter option that we didn’t have in the Dowling game.”

“I like our chances if we keep it close early and or if we are ahead,” McTaggart said.
