On a sweltering Thursday afternoon, the varsity boys’ golf team finished second out of four area-teams with a score of 168 over nine holes at the Pleasant valley golf course.
Calvin Greenberg ‘16 thinks improvement for the team lies in the short game.
“I think everybody struggled with their short putting,” Greenberg said, “but that’s something we can fix on the putting green”
Despite having troubles with putting, experience is a positive factor that Greenberg attributes to the Little Hawks’ second place finish. The team lost two seniors last season, but the squad has multiple returning players bringing their familiarity with the courses to the table.
“We have a lot more experience from last year, we have four or five players coming back, a lot more experience when it comes to golf courses we’ve played before,” Greenberg said.
The team’s current nine hole shooting average is 30 less than last year’s, an effect of their increased practice load on-course.
“[We do] a lot of practice; I try to be out on the golf course almost every day,” Garrett Highly ‘17 said. “Just chipping and putting helps a lot, but you still have to hit the drive and be in the fair way”.
The team will return to the green Thursday, Sept. 8 at the Cedar Rapids Country Club for the Crandic Golf Tournament. The event will start at 9:30.
