Five City High students auditioned for the Southeastern Iowa Band Association jazz honor band this past weekend, and three were accepted. Levi Pugh (piano), Joseph Stoltz (trombone) and Joey Schnoebelen (trumpet) are the three musicians representing the school that leads in the band.

Stoltz, Schnoebelen and Pugh will meet with the band on Saturday, January 23rd for a full day of rehearsal with a performance ending the day. Schnoebelen says since the rehearsal is so brief, knowing the music beforehand is key so the band can work on perfecting the music.

“It’s really just getting the style down and making sure dynamics [are good],” Schnoebelen says.

The two horn players were excited to have been selected and to have the opportunity to be directed by Bob Washut from UNI.

“Washut…is fantastic, probably one of the top, if not the top, jazz pianists in Iowa,” Schnoebelen said. “He’s incredible. He’s written a couple of of City High’s tunes.”

“I love jazz and [SEIBA jazz] is a great experience getting to play with the top players in the area,” Stoltz, ‘17, said.
