City High students Sarah Smith ‘17 and Lucy McGehee ‘17 have been awarded the Iowa High School Press Association’s (IHSPA) Emerging Journalist award. After being chosen as one of the 24 finalists, they were recently chosen along with 8 others as Emerging Journalist winners.  

In order to win the award, participants had to enter a resume and a collection of their best work. It then was judged by members of the IHSPA, including journalism teachers and educators.

“It was really exciting for my work to be recognized,” said Smith, who along with McGehee will be recognized at the IHSPA’s Fall Conference.

Applicants included freshman, sophomores and juniors from different school journalism programs around the state. Winners of the award received recognitions, as well as $100 of Iowa Summer Journalism Workshops that are held during the summer on the University of Iowa campus.
