City High Prevails Over Linn Mar With 4-0 Victory

After being announced as the only undefeated team in the state after Iowa City West High’s loss to Bettendorf on May 5th, the City High men’s soccer team is even closer to achieving their goal of state champions.

The Little Hawks traveled to Marion on Friday, May 13, to play the defending state champions, the Linn Mar Lions.

With nothing but a state championship in their eyes, the Little Hawks stunned the Lions with a powerful 4-0 victory.

“We [City High] played like men today,” head coachJose Fajardo said. “We got our defense and midfield moving, and we finished our chances and that is what makes me love this game the most.”

Sophomore Jackson Meyer proved to be deadly in both defense and and offense, scoring a goal in the first minute and shutting down the attacking force of Linn Mar’s Leroy Enzugusi ’16 and Danny Peak ’18. Mitch McCarthy ’16 got his name on the score sheet after scoring a goal off a set piece to give the Little Hawks a 2-0 lead going into halftime. However, the high attacking pressure was present throughout the entire game.

Nasim Salih ’16 caused problems for the Linn Mar defense in the 48′, scoring a tap in after a great cross shot from Jackson Meyer, and also causing a penalty in the 65′.

“We tried out a new formation for today’s game around making sure Leroy [Enzugusi] couldn’t get the ball at all because he’s so deadly on the attack,” Collin O’Meara ’16 said. “We played so well on both sides of the pitch, and this game gives us great motivation going into our next game on Tuesday.”

The Little Hawks play their next match at home on Tuesday, May 17th, against West High.
