Super Smash Bros for Wii U is the Fifth and most recent game in the Super Smash Bros Series. Though the Wii U version doesn’t add much more than the 3DS version (Considered the Fourth installment, which was released only two months before SSB for Wii U), this game adds much more to the 3rd installment, Super Smash Bros Brawl. New additions include game modes, characters, game mechanics, and graphics. Though not as competitive and fast as SSB2 (Melee), The game speed has been increased from the unpopular and more casual-friendly SSB3 (Brawl).

SSB for Wii U has won 17 gaming community awards since its release. One especially noteworthy thing for competitive players is that the game can be played through the Wii U GamePad, Wii Remote (With or without a Nunchuck), Classic Controller, Wii U Pro Controller, Classic Controller Pro, GameCube Controller through GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U, and the Nintendo 3DS. This assortment of controllers ensures that any players used to controllers from any old games don’t have to try to adapt to a new controller. Though this is unfortunate for Wii U owners, as GameCube controllers don’t work for any other Wii U games.

Smash Bros can be played with items that randomly spawn, to add chaos to the game, while cleverly mixing in references from different character’s games. From Mario’s Blue and Green shells to Fairy Bottle from Legend of Zelda and even the X Bomb from Kid Icarus: Uprising. These items not only bring back memories from old games but can be used strategically to have massive effects on the battle.

Super Smash Bros has always been a fighter game where every character has the same buttons to do similar attacks, but vary slightly, character to character. Every character has at least 23 attacks, with more attacks with some characters, in the form of combos, tilts or even Luigi’s infamous taunt attack.

Since its release, 7 new characters, 17 outfits, and 3 stages have been released as purchasable DLCs. These additions add to the worst part about SSB for Wii U, the price. With the total price for the game and the DLCs adding up to $104.92, the game is just too expensive for many young gamers. With the addition of Amiibos, which are extra collectible figurines that bring a character into the game when placed on the Wii U GamePad (a chip inside the figurine stores save data for the character,) the game rises to the ridiculous price of $859.34. The game is still entirely playable without any DLCs, and Amiibos are entirely unnecessary, but the DLCs add too much to the game to enjoy it for long without them.

I found this to be a great game that can be played simply from the chaotic 8-player smash in a unique battle that plays out differently every time to competitive one on one battles that are true tests of skill.
