Season three of Telltale Games’ ‘The Walking Dead: A New Frontier’ has been released with two episodes available to play for the end of 2016. Being a game of interactive points and clicks, the story progresses with the choices that the player makes, giving each player a unique twist to the story.

Players have a choice to initiate the game with Clementine, a major character from previous seasons, or Javier Garcia (also known as Javi), a new character being introduced for a fresh perspective. This allowed players to either experience the game with an old time friend and build further relations, or follow up in new scenario that brought mystery and curiosity.

The first episode (from Javier’s perspective), ’Ties That Bind – Part one’ starts with an emotional scene where we see two brothers verbally and physically fighting about Javi’s absence for their father’s passing. The scene brought silence and tears with a hint of confusion as to where Javi has been for the time that passed.

We see as the timeline progresses, the game keeps its realism pertaining to human emotions, behaviors, and interactions when put into an apocalyptic world filled with infectious disease. This aspect helps us to relate and bond to the characters along their survival while also bringing in our choices to tailor the story, giving  much more realism than fantasy to the game.

Contributing to the realism, graphics have been giving an upgrade. In the first season, graphics were choppy, less-detailed, and had a muted color palette.

Now, with the growing advancement of technology, season three graphics are vibrant, clear, and have an added ‘sketchy’ style improving detail. This upgrade allowed the story line to be set into an appropriate mood, furthering realistic features.

Moving on, season three’s story line could not be better. In this season, we come into contact with a group of survivors who are more than just different from others. From previous seasons, we have not seen this side of people and it takes surviving to a whole new level. This aspect draws in the player’s attention and forces quick interaction which creates panic and suspense throughout the game.

Coming to a conclusion, my overall rating for Telltale’s third adaptation of ‘The Walking Dead’ is nine stars out of ten. Throughout the years, the game has been given some great upgrades. Some of the items identified to improve the game further are minor, however, more episodes would be an added bonus.
