School Board to Discuss Student Immigration Protections
The ICCSD School Board is planning to address protection for students from undocumented families in their upcoming February 28th meeting. The motion was added to the agenda in the wake of national discussion about the possibility of reducing protections, increasing deportation of undocumented immigrants and rescinding DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) status for undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as Children. As of right now, the district’s current policy is that a student’s immigration status does not affect their ability to enroll in the ICCSD and that the district does not share student immigration information with officials for law enforcement purposes.
The meeting will take place at 6 pm at the school district building on North Dodge St. Several advocacy groups such as the Center for Workers Justice and Students Against Hate and Discrimination plan to attend.
