On Thursday, April 27th, the City High Little Hawks hosted Prairie High School’s soccer team. On Tuesday, April 25th, the Little Hawks lost in double overtime against Xavier High School on their home field. City, with a record of 4-4, faced 4-3 Prairie.

For City, the game started off very well. Less than one minute into the first half, Madeline Pugh ’19 received a ball from Sophie Van Meter ’17 and smashed the ball into the net, putting the score at 1-0. The game was very much controlled by City and the Little Hawks kept creating goals in front of Prairie’s goal. With 26 minutes left in the first half, Kennedy Menzel ’20 passed the ball from the right side of the field into the center of the goal box to Van Meter ’17, who finished the ball. City was now up two goals. Prairie seemed to be getting tired. Sydney Deprenger ’18, the only junior on the varsity roster, brought the ball down the right side of the field, and dribbled through Prairie’s defense. She scored and the Little Hawks were up 3 goals at halftime against their opponents, the Prairie Hawks.

Going into the second half, City continued to control the game. One of Prairie’s forwards snagged the ball from City and was able to place the ball past goalie Naomi Meurice ’19.

The final score was 3-1. Since it was their first win since the game against Davenport North, this was a confidence booster for City. The Little Hawks will be traveling to Waterloo, Tuesday May 2nd to face Waterloo West at 4:15.
