Another Win For City Brings Conference Title Closer To Home

The end of the season is near and soccer games are becoming increasingly more important. Tuesday, May 16th, the City High women’s soccer team faced Cedar Falls at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex. With this win, City would have a shot at winning the conference title. This has not happened at City since 2002.

At kickoff, City immediately showed dominance on the ball. They possessed the ball and in the second minute of the game, Sydney Deprenger ’18 crossed the ball in from the right side of the field and Sophie Van Meter ’17 finished the ball in from the back post. The game remained 1-0 until halftime.

At the beginning of the second half, the game seemed messy. Neither team could complete more than 5 passes without mistakes and there was a lack of rhythm. With 30 minutes left in the game, Cedar Falls caught up to City with an own goal by City’s Madeline Pugh ’19. This gave Cedar Falls confidence in themselves. But with 15 minutes left, Deprenger ’18 had a break away and placed the ball past the goalie. City won 2-1.

City’s next game is against conference leader Kennedy. The battle for conference title will be on Thursday,  May 18th at 4:15 on City’s turf.
