Possible Homecoming Court Changes Coming Next Year
April 4, 2018
On an early morning in the City High Student Senate, Xeniphilius Tyne ’20 asked if the Homecoming Court could change. At the moment, Tyne feels the court is heteronormative. They brought up the change on Wednesday, February 14th and hope to have the court changed by next fall.
Tyne has had problems with the current system since their freshman year.
“I was like, ‘Hey, this is pretty heteronormative and there’s not really any room for people who are LGBTQ,’” said Tyne.
Tyne went about beginning this change by first mentioning the topic in a Student Senate meeting, creating a committee, and arranging a meeting with Principal Bacon.
“I’ll talk to him about why it needs to happen and if need be I will have a written report out,” said Tyne. “We have a survey that will go out if he [Bacon] is interested in actual statistics.”
The Homecoming Court traditionally proceeds with students choosing 14 girls and 14 boys, then narrowing down that list to seven and seven, and then two and two. Tyne is planning on changing the system so students won’t be grouped based on gender. Instead, they will not be grouped at all.
“It’s a really simple change we’re going to make. It’s not going to affect much,” said Tyne. “It’s just going to eliminate the gender.”
