Teacher Appreciation Week: Mr. Schumann
Considering my high school experience so far, I know there is at least one person from it who I will never forget: Mr. Schumann, the AP World History teacher. I knew he was going to be an iconic part of my life from the very first day. When he pulled up his expertly-crafted PowerPoint and immediately started explaining how this class would prepare us to succeed on the AP test with an enthusiastic fervor I’ve never seen paralleled, it was like an instant click.
History has always been my favorite subject, but it is a notoriously hard class to look forward to in school as the curriculum can be tedious and boring. I was nervous about taking AP World because of the sheer volume of information I was going to have to retain. But with Mr. Schumann, the class has been the most fun, entertaining, wholesome experience I’ve had at City High.
Mr. Schumann is an amazing teacher. It is so obvious how much he cares about world history by his elaborate presentations, but he’s also super passionate about teaching. All of his lessons are intriguing and easy to understand, and the fun he has talking about his area of expertise rubs off on his classes. His dedication to our growth as students never ceases to baffle me. He knows how to discuss difficult political topics freely but sensitively, as well as consistently hammering home issues like racism and the patriarchy, influencing his students to make change themselves.
Mr. Schumann’s also just a great guy. He loves puns, talks about his feisty daughters all the time, and has a great laugh. I’m so glad I got to learn world history from one of the kindest people I’ve met, who encourages all to have fun and do the right thing, and is also a great role model. World history would not have been the engaging and awesome experience it was for me had it not been for Mr. Schumann.
