New Teacher Profile: Mr. Carlson
Among the new teachers working at City High is Travis Carlson. Although new to City, Carlson has an abundance of experience from working at Northwest Junior High.
“I’ve been a teacher in the district for 17 years and at City, I’m excited to teach high schoolers,” Carlson said. ”Having the opportunity to teach psychology has been a career goal that I’ve found here at City High.”
Carlson describes his goals as a teacher as being larger than teaching each subject.
“I really want to get students interested so that they get something from the subject,” Carlson said. “But, I also want to teach them how to be better students and apply what they learned with things like time management.”
Outside of teaching, Carlson enjoys working with machinery and spending time with his children.
“I’m a big gearhead. I like to take things apart and rebuild cars, that sort of thing,” Carlson said. “I also have two children who keep me busy.”
During first trimester, Carlson will teach Psychology in room 2101, a subject that he became interested in as he learned about human behavior and decision-making during college.
“This brought me to the field of psychology and secondary education,” Carlson said. “Both history and psychology involve the study of humans, and being one, I found both subjects to be insightful.”
Growing up, Carlson became interested in education after watching his teachers enjoy themselves with their jobs.
“I guess I always knew I wanted to be a teacher in some capacity and I like to view teaching as an art form,” Carlson said. “I believe the greatest teachers could teach just about anything if given a little time to prepare.”
