Mary Lestina is the 6th City High science teacher to be named the Iowa Science Teacher of the Year by the Iowa Academy of Science. She won the Physical Science Teacher category of the award. Other categories include Biological Science and Elementary Science.
“They’re not just given away. It’s an honor,” said co-worker Nicole Scott when asked about the award.
To achieve this high honor, teachers must be nominated by a student, co-worker or administrator. Winners are announced in the spring and awarded in the fall. They receive a cash prize.
“It’s very nice recognition,” said Scott.
