The Cultured Corner: December 2018
The Cultured Corner is a column on pop culture where we bring you the news that students are talking about, from the students themselves, in their own words.
On Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas Getting Married |
“I saw pictures, it was really beautiful. I saw pictures of what looked like two different weddings that kind of did stuff from both of their cultures and that was really cool, I thought. It’s just nice that they were just kind of compromising and embracing both aspects and it was important for both of them that their cultures were acknowledged. I thought it was really cool.” ~Rylie Kelley ’21 |
On Beyonce and Ed Sheeran’s Style Gap |
“I heard that Ed Sheeran was underdressed for the performance in South Africa. Everyone is complaining that he’s too underdressed to perform with Beyonce. [He was wearing] a t-shirt and jeans. I guess they’re like performing and some people are like, ‘You gotta be dressed up if you’re going to perform with Beyonce!’ I mean yeah, he was underdressed but I wasn’t bothered by it. I don’t really care.” ~Jaylen Randle ’20 |
On Ariana Grande’s song, Thank You, Next |
I like it. It’s really catchy. I [first] listened to it when my friend was playing it and it kind of grew on me. It’s in my Spotify. It makes me happier. ~Assiatou Bah ’19 |
On Cardi B and Offset’s Divorce |
“I’m so sad to admit that I did hear about that. I heard they had a fight. I think he cheated on her. It’s a waste of time for most people. I don’t care at all. I just drew a Pikachu from the meme. I’d so much rather spend my time on this.” ~Brennan Hill ’19 |
On the Baby, It’s Cold Outside Controversy |
“It’s an old Christmas song or holiday song but it has lot’s of underlying stuff in there that’s kind of rape culture and then you’re like hmm, but it’s also such a widely known song. but then it also has all this toxic stuff in it which is not good. I think it’s a good tune– it catchy– but the lyrics are definitely problematic.” ~Sylvia Gidal ’20 |
