With the jazz band soon to finish its competition season, pressure has been high as all four of the bands played at the SEIBA Jazz Competition hosted at West High on March 2, 2019. The energetic music bounced around the room as the bands played in front of a panel of four who criticized and studied each of the bands.

The first band to perform was the Jazz Workshop at the beginning of the day. They opened with “Kool Beans” by George Vincent. They followed their first song with “When Johnny Comes Struttin’ Home” by Bryan Kidd. Lastly, they played “Listen Here” by Eddie Harris. They tied for fifth place out of ten other bands.

Jazz Workshop was followed by the Jazz Lab performance only an hour later. They started by playing the song “Sack o’ Woe” by Cannonball Adderly. They followed it with the song “Canaval” by Erik Morales. Finally, they finished their competition with the song “Hit the Bricks” by Gordon Goodwin. They finished fourth place out of ten other bands.

After Lab had finished their clinic, Jazz Collective had their turn in the competition. They began with “Kicks n’ Licks” by Howard Rowe was followed with “Pescados Fescos” by Armando Rivera. The next song was “I Remember Clifford” by Benny Golson arranged by Sammy Nestico. They finished by playing “Honk” by Jeff Jarvis. They ranked second place out of ten other bands.

Jazz Ensemble was the last to perform at the contest. They opened with the song “Dance of Denial” by Michael Mossman which they followed with “Bluebird of the Delhi” by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. Finally, they finished the competition with”Torque” by Alan Baylock. The ranked third in the 4A category out of eight other schools.  

For Jazz Workshop and Jazz Lab, their second-to-last performance will be the Spring Concert, which will take place on April 29. Jazz Collective and Jazz Ensemble will have their last performance at the ped mall on May 17.
