Breaking News: Iowa City Community School District Acquires Funding to Monitor Student Social Media Accounts
October 29, 2019
The Iowa City Community School District has secured a $187,000 grant from the United States Department of Justice with the goal of identifying students who may be a risk to themselves or others. The majority of the funding will be put into a threat assessment team that would have an employee paid $50,000 for two years.
The rest of the funding is for a social media monitoring system that would potentially monitor students’ Google Drive accounts and social media to attempt to help with issues such as cyberbullying.

is this even ethical? it’s one thing to monitor your own internet but it is another entirely to spy on people outside of school. and to proactively look for people who they think are naughty, this is almost dystopic at this point.
