The stands of Mercer Aquatic Center were packed with spectators as they prepared to watch the girls swimming and diving team face off against Dubuque Hempstead. In the end, the City High varsity team won with 105 points to Dubuque Hempstead’s 78.

“The meet went really [well], everybody kept a good mindset,” Averi Loria ‘22 said. “Everybody swam their best and [has] improved since time trials, so that was good to see.”

Loria was elected a team captain this year and has been leading the team since the start of the season.

“[The season] has been going really well,” Loria said.  “Everybody’s been working really hard at practice; we’ve been practicing eight times a week and we’ve had good attendance for all those.”

At the meet, the team came away with many first-place finishes, including wins in both the junior varsity and varsity heats of the 200-meter freestyle relay, with times of 2:12.81 and 1:49.52 respectively.

“I’m looking forward to our varsity team hopefully going to districts and state,” Loria said. “I’m also very excited to watch all the junior varsity girls that have not been swimming for very long.”
