With being ranked second in the state, the City High men’s wrestling team is looking forward to a very thrilling season. Over half the team includes ranked wrestlers and three of which are in the top 3. The team is not only relying on top ranked wrestlers but the up and coming wrestlers who are currently placed at the varsity level such as Kendall Kurtz ’25, Tono Cornell ’24 and Obed Dominguez ’24.

“My expectations are high,” said Kendall Kurtz ‘25, “we are ranked top 10 in the preseason rankings.  A lot of people are wanting to score bonus points for the team, it helps us out a lot.” When asked what his main goal for this year was, Kurtz said, “I want to get to state; however, when I do get there, it’s really about placing.”

Last season the Wrestling team did not have the best record, but they did have very positive outcomes in dual meets against West and Liberty.

Though the record was not the best, the team had very talented wrestlers such as Ben Kueter ‘23, Cale Seaton ‘24, Kael Kurtz ‘24, Jake Mitchell ’24  and Ryan Ott ‘23.

But this year City High has new additions to the team, these new additions have made an impact on the team as the Little hawks are coming into the season ranked 2nd in the state. The new additions are wrestlers Gabe Arnold ‘23 and Tono Cornell ’24 . Gabe Arnold, a transfer coming in from Pennsylvania ranked 2nd in the state at 170lbs is a key addition coming into this season. The other new asset to the team is Tono Cornell, a transfer from Independence, Iowa, coming into the season at heavyweight.

The City High men’s wrestling team has very high expectations and goals for the upcoming season. They’ve put in countless hours of training and with that comes determination to dominate this season.
