After suffering a deflating Week one loss to Illinois powerhouse Joliet Catholic Academy, City High looks to regroup away at Liberty and bring the Zeus trophy back to Iowa City.
Last year, City High faced Liberty at the historic Nile Kinnick Stadium, home of Iowa Hawkeye Football. 13,000 fans were in attendance which broke the attendance record for high school football in the state of Iowa. While City fought back and forth throughout the whole game, Liberty was able to pull through with a couple of scores late in the 2nd half of the game to win the Zeus trophy, and ultimately upset City High for the first time since 2019.
“We definitely remember that feeling of walking out of Kinnick last year, and that’s all the motivation we need,” Dominic Salibi ’25 said.
Coming into this Week 2 matchup, both City and Liberty look to pick up their first win of the season. The Little Hawks were not satisfied with the result last year and look to perform better with a more experienced crew in this year’s matchup.
“I feel like last year we were a lot less experienced and there were a lot of spots to fill, but I think everyone has done a great job this off-season of stepping up,” Tyler Rindels ‘25 said.
