What is the first thing you do when you get to journalism?
Usually the first thing I do is have a quick meeting with Mr. Rogers [City’s journalism adviser], so he can give me a debrief of what we need to do.
What does a typical journalism period look like for you?
I walk in, talk to Mr. Rogers, advise some of the students, and then run back and forth all period. Between helping students and doing my own stuff, I’m very busy. Most of my stuff gets done outside of journalism because I spend most of the period helping students.
What is the hardest part of your job?
Giving critiques, because I don’t want to be mean. Everyone has a design they think looks good. No design is really wrong, but some designs are better for judges, so we have some designs we definitely want to use.
What is your favorite part of journalism?
I like interacting with people. I’m good at bossing people around, which doesn’t sound like a good thing, but it helps with my job.
Why did you choose yearbook?
Well, when I was a freshman I went to the [Iowa High School] Journalism Conference. We were winning a lot of awards for our newspaper and website, but we weren’t winning many for our yearbook. That’s what inspired me, plus I enjoy taking photos more than writing stories.
