The NFL trade deadline passed at 3pm EST on Tuesday, October 31st. The deadline is a time for contending teams to look to add that final piece for a playoff run. It is also used as a time for teams who are struggling to sell off their talented players for draft capital. We will go over four of the most impactful trades here.
Titans trade All-Pro safety to Eagles for Safety Terrel Edmunds and a 4th and 5th round pick.
Titans: B
A lot of fans called this a “fleece” by the Eagles, but when you look deeper into it, not so much. The Titans have been struggling so far this season, and with an aging Kevin Byard on a big contract, he was likely not part of the future plans of this team. The Titans got what they could for him.
Eagles: A
Philadelphia is contending with an aggressive GM in Howie Roseman and they needed secondary help, so they went out and got an All-Pro in Kevin Byard.
Commanders trade Montez Sweat to Chicago for a 2nd round pick.
Bears: B
The Bears were in dire need of pass-rush help, and Sweat brings that, but at 2-6 and Sweat in need of a contract extension a 2nd-round pick seems steep. The Bears will need to sign Sweat to a long-term contract for this trade to be worth it for them.
Commanders: B+
The Commanders had two edge rushers in need of contracts: Sweat and Chase Young. They decided to deal both (Will get into Chase Young next). Dealing Sweat returned a 2nd round pick which will likely be 33-40 overall, as it’s coming from Chicago. This deal brought Washington cap flexibility and a likely top 2nd round selection.
Commanders send Chase Young to San Francisco for a 3rd round pick.
49ers: A
San Francisco is a top contender for the NFC and with a struggling pass rush outside of Nick Bosa, this move made a lot of sense for the 49ers, especially with the price only being a 3rd round selection.
Commanders: C
With two top-level pass rushers up for contracts this season, Washington was likely to trade one. Montez Sweat seemed like the more obvious piece to move, as he is older than Chase Young, but the Commanders decided to deal both Sweat and Young. This was a surprising move to some, as many have said they should have kept and paid Young, as he is only 24, but because of his history with injuries, Washington decided to move on.
Vikings acquire Josh Dobbs from Arizona for a 6th-round pick.
Vikings: B+
With Kirk Cousins likely going down for the year with a torn achilles, Minnesota needed a plug and play QB. Josh Dobbs fits that mold, and he only cost them a 6th.
Cardinals: A
With Kyler Murray likely to return soon, Dobbs likely had no value for them going forward, so Arizona at least got something.
