Megan Stucky has big shoes to fill as City High’s new orchestra director, but she is ready to step up to the plate (or podium, if you will). The Little Hawk sat down with her to find out more about what she is expecting this year.

Q: What were you doing before this job at City High?

A: I was the director of orchestras for grades 5-12 in Marshalltown, IA.

Q: What made this job an appealing one for you?

A: City High’s orchestra program is looked at as one of the best in the state. I have spent 9 years wanting a job like this.

Q: What is going to be your biggest challenge this year?

A: Exceeding the extremely high expectations that come along with such an established orchestra with such a great reputation.

Q: What are you hoping to bring to the program?

A: I want the orchestra to be more visible. We will continue to be out in the community showcasing our talent. This year, for the first time in a while, we will be participating in the Iowa Large Group contest. I think getting feedback is really important, and an outside view is always helpful.

Q: What have your first impressions of City High been?

A: The students and staff are so welcoming. Over the summer, I had e-mails from parents and staff coming in. I really felt at home even before I moved, which was great.

Q: What is your background in music?

A: I am a violinist, with my degree from UNI. I am a member of the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Symphony orchestra.

Q: What are you most excited for?

A: So much. Really mostly to be able to work with such a talented group. It’s so exciting to make real music, and do real conducting.
