On Tuesday February 24th, the Little Hawks, who are currently ranked 11th in class 5A rankings, will face cross town rivals, the Liberty Bolts in the Class 5A Regional Finals held at Liberty High School. This could be City’s first ticket to state in 3 years.
The Little hawks beat Liberty in their first meetup of the season 52-43, but fell to them in a very close game in their last meet up, therefore they are hoping to get a redemption from their last match up. The Little Hawks current team record is 16-7 while the Bolts are 16-6, so the game is predicted to be a close one.
“I think that it’s been our goal to get here and I think that everybody on our team believed we could get here and we just have to finish the job.” Tessa Driscoll ‘26 said.
August Palmer ‘25 currently leads the team with 322 points and Kaitlin Loria ‘27 coming in a close second with 276 points this season. Tessa Driscoll ‘26 also is up on the leader board with 243 points. Emmy McComas ‘25, with 79 assists, takes the assist lead for the team. Palmer and Loria are also rebound leaders along with McComas.
“I’m really excited for our team to play in such an exciting atmosphere with a chance to play in the state tournament on the line. Our girls have put a lot of work in, and they’re such a close knit group that trusts each other and wants the best for each other, and it’s paid off this year. I’m really proud of them, and am looking forward to what they can do tomorrow.” Head Coach Lynsey Barnard said.
Liberty is led by Junior Natalie Ramsey, averaging 22.0 PPG and 10.3 RPG. Madeline Casey is also a key player for Liberty with 12.7 PPG. However, City has been putting up a strong suit, beating CR Jefferson 73-37 in their most recent game, which is sure to be a confidence booster for the Little Hawks. Kaitlin Loria ‘27 dropped 16 points and Hattie Galloway ‘27 and Maybes Miller ’27 followed along, both dropping 11 points.
Even though this is a big game for the Little Hawks, they are still excited for tomorrow’s match up and the potential win.
“I’m excited to get the chance to have another rivalry game and enjoy every moment with everyone.” said Emmy McComas ‘25. Halle Larew ‘26 also added about “staying positive, working as a team, and really just keeping the energy up.”
This match up will be helped at Liberty High School at 7pm, on Tuesday Feb 25th, and the Student Section theme is Blackout.
