With a previous record of 6-10, City High Girls Tennis is looking for a redemption for the 24-25 season. Starting with the new head coach hire, Ann Camblin, who was the Iowa State Cyclones single season-school record holder up until 2023.
“I’m super excited to have a coach with a lot of tennis experience,” Hattie Conover ‘25 said. Considering we are losing a lot of seniors next year, it will be good for our program to have a coach that can lead younger players in the right direction before they emerge into the top 6 next year.”
Conover was a key player for the team last year, holding an undefeated season from the number three to number six spot. The Little Hawks are an upperclassmen led team with Conover being one of seven seniors on this year’s varsity roster.
The Little Hawks have also been utilizing a top 6 JV team as a practice squad to help better improve each player’s ability and to mold them for being potential Varsity players in the future seasons, because of most of the Varsity top 6 graduating after this season.
“I’m super excited for this season! I think we’re going to go far this year. I also think that we have a lot of promising JV players to replace this year’s seniors on varsity, which it’s important because 5 out of the 6 top players are all graduating! Evi Smith ‘27 has a lot of potential.” Greta Hayek ‘25 said.
Other key players include Amelia Wolfe ‘25 and Sydney Geisen ‘26. Wolfe was named Mississippi Valley – 1st Team All-Conference and Geisen was named Mississippi Valley – 2nd Team All-Conference. They will be playing at the number one and number two spots.
“I’m excited to see how this season goes, especially with a new coach, the team has a good bond and I think it will benefit how we work as a team together for the upcoming season.” Geisen said.
The Little Hawks are due to play Cedar Falls at home for their first game of the season. They unfortunately fell to Cedar Falls 3-6 last season but are hoping to get back this year with a win. Cedar Falls key players include sophomore Mackenzie Sagers who went 13-2 last season and sophomore Indre Jankunas.
New hope for success is underway for the Girls Tennis team, as they prepare to have a stellar season with a first year head coach in what will be the final spring season before girls tennis shifts into a fall sport.
