As Emily Sotelo crossed the finish line, she was mobbed by city high teammates. Screams erupted from the crowd, and tears of joy were shed.
Friday May 14th, at the regional track meet, City high beat West high for the first time this season, while clenching a meet victory. When the scores were tallied, city had won 193 to 188, and qualified for state in sixteen out of eighteen events.
City high won 8 events, and came in second in 8 which automatically qualifies those events for state. An unfortunate muscle injury pulled Brittney Nelson, city’s varsity long jumper, out of competition for the night.
Starting May 20th, the 2010 state track meet will be underway. City High beat west high last year for the first time at the state meet.
“The district meet was an outstanding meet for our team. Due to the leadership of our seniors and the push from everyone on the team, we had an excellent team performance. We were able to double in all but one running event. We also “doubled” in the long jump. In the relays, we ran season’s best performances in all but one. As a result, we will have a very busy weekend at the state meet,” said coach Tom Carey.
