What to Know about the Journalism Program

City High’s Journalism Program is a collaboration of student staff members working to produce both The Little Hawk (print newspaper & news website) and The Red And White (Yearbook). Additionally, this group of students of all grade levels is always happy to welcome new staff members to the program.

Within The Little Hawk, the classes are led by students creating a unique classroom experience. Those interested in joining News Lab and working to write and help produce the print newspaper and website must take the prerequisite course Foundations of Journalism for one year. Those interested in Broadcast Lab, working on videos and podcasts can join either after taking Foundations of Journalism or with instructor permission.

Those looking to join The Red And White can either take Foundations of Journalism or be approved by the instructor to begin working with the yearbook team taking photos and making pages upon joining the class.

The Journalism Program at City High has something to offer everyone. Students get to experience a collaborative environment where any passion can become a project and there is always something to learn, whether that’s how to design pages for the yearbook, the best way to edit photos, or how to interview a peer. Furthermore, students can step into editor positions and get real-life leadership experience.

Credits and Course Information

To get involved talk to your guidance counselor or select your journalism class of choice when making your schedule for the next school year. Seniors looking to join News Lab will not need to take the Foundations of Journalism prerequisite.

Foundations of Journalism: One-year course, fulfills English 12 requirements

Yearbook Lab: One-year elective course. Prerequisite: Foundations of Journalism or instructor approval.

Broadcast Lab: One-year elective course. Prerequisite: Foundations of Journalism or instructor approval.

News Lab: One-year elective course. Prerequisite: Foundations of Journalism or instructor approval.
